How Nigerian airlines add up to 40% to your ticket price through hidden charges and baggage fees

A detailed analysis of domestic airline pricing reveals that the advertised fare is rarely the final price. We map every surcharge across Nigeria’s busiest domestic routes.

You search for a flight from Lagos to Abuja. The advertised fare is ₦35,000. By the time you complete your booking, the charge on your card is ₦49,200. That gap — ₦14,200, or 40.6% of the advertised price — is made up of charges that every airline applies but few advertise prominently.

What you are actually paying for

Our analysis of booking flows across Nigeria’s four major domestic carriers identified seven distinct charge categories added to the base fare: an aviation development levy, passenger service charge, fuel surcharge, security fee, and — on three of the four airlines — a default paid seat selection that you must actively opt out of.

Your rights when things go wrong

NCAA Consumer Protection Regulations entitle you to a full refund if your flight is cancelled, compensation if denied boarding due to overbooking, and meals or accommodation if a delay exceeds specified thresholds. File complaints with NCAA at consumer.ncaa.gov.ng.
