Toyota Recalls New RAV4 PHEVs Over Hybrid System Shutdown

Approximately 31,000 MY2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid vehicles are being recalled because the hybrid system could shut down while driving.

The issue carries a similar safety risk to the loss-of-power problems that have plagued Jeep’s now-discontinued 4xe plug-in hybrids, although the underlying defects differ.

This particular case concerns an electronic control unit (ECU) defect. A sudden loss of motive power, particularly at higher speeds, could increase the risk of a crash.

According to the Japanese company Toyota, the remedy consists of an ECU software update only, so the issue does not appear to stem from a mechanical failure. It is a similar case to the roughly 21,000 Toyota bZ, Subaru Solterra, and Lexus RZ EVs recalled earlier this year over a separate ECU defect that could also cause a loss of power.

With the RAV4 now exclusively available with electrified powertrains and remaining one of Toyota’s most important products, any reliability issue could invite greater scrutiny and potentially affect consumer confidence. Additionally, PHEVs tend to be more problematic than conventional hybrids, with Consumer Reports saying last year that PHEVs and EVs experienced about 80% more problems than gasoline-only vehicles, an option the U.S.-spec RAV4 dropped for 2026.

Toyota will start notifying affected U.S. owners by early December 2026. The same ECU issue also affects RAV4 PHEV units outside the U.S. Approximately 7,846 units are affected in Canada, while 5,925 units are affected in Australia. Meanwhile, the automaker is recalling about 5,307 units in Japan.

Again, the latest recall involves PHEV units only, not the conventional hybrid version, which sold 28,642 units in the U.S. in September 2026, about 23,098 units more than the plug-in version.
